From Broadway to living rooms throughout Orange County
Goshen’s Authentic Antique Lumber builds custom furniture, checkerboards, and even sets for Broadway.

Every piece of wood tells a story — and at the family-owned Authentic Antique Lumber, every creation is crafted with soul and intention.
Specializing in reclaimed wood, custom furniture and antique lumber, the local business meets all woodworking needs, and can answer any and all questions about custom projects.
At their Goshen, NY location, piles upon piles of wood lay out in the yard; a glance into the process behind the finely-crafted projects you could one day take home. Antique Lumber can bring any vision to life, from finished checker boards to custom furniture like conference tables and beds. They offer a variety of materials to work with, and can even make a shuffleboard table, perfect for family game night.
Barns and Broadway
Antique Lumber founder Sal Mastropolo Jr. began taking down barns in 1979, when a man named Walter Kanon offered him $800 to dismantle his old barn. According to a 2015 article in Orange Magazine, Mastropolo then started placing ads in the newspapers where he knew old barns were located, offering to take them down in exchange for the wood.
Mastropolo also cut firewood and sold it in Manhattan, and while working in the city he placed flyers on cars advertising his barn wood business. Someone who worked for Polo Ralph Lauren took a flyer from a windshield in 1983 and called to inquire about barn siding — and soon, Polo became his biggest client.
Mastropolo later started a business called Theatrical Props, with two New York locations. One of the many notable projects it contributed to was Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” which opened on Broadway in 1987.
Sal Mostropolo III, the son of Antique Lumber founder Sal Mostropolo Jr., began polishing his wood-working skills in his teens, working closely with and alongside his father. As the owner and operator of the business today, he carries on his father’s legacy and continues to share his craft with the rest of his community, focusing largely on furniture.
Goshen is also the site of their custom wood and milling services, where wood is milled from logs and beams, the source of various finely-made projects. Their equipment is advanced, allowing for clean, high-quality cuts. The business cares deeply about sustainability, and makes sure to use every part of each log and beam.
Signs, furniture, floor refinishing and more
Aside from Antique Lumber’s hand-made creations, they provide other services, like furniture finishing, kiln drying services and floor, stair and rail refinishing. The business also creates customized, engraved signs for special occasions such as showers and weddings.
In the yard, there are different trailers with various wood types to choose from, and patrons are welcomed in to choose their pieces.
Customers are involved throughout the entire building process for each project.
“Making them feel comfortable that we know what they want is a big part in the beginning of the process,” Mastropolo said.
Authentic Antique Lumber’s Woodshop and Lumber yard is located in Goshen, NY, with show rooms in Rye, NY and Upper Saddle River, NJ.
