‘When did Santa Claus become the enemy?'

To the editor, What is this world coming to? Is everyone so preoccupied with being politically correct that they just forgot about human kindness? Teaching our children about other cultures and religions is part of education. Is that going to stop soon also? When did Santa Claus become the enemy? When my children went through the Warwick school system, every year they came home with dreidels, made in school. Is this a religious item? I think so. Why is that okay? As a Roman Catholic I am also outraged that the school district would associate a non-religious icon with the Catholic Church. The Catholic religion is based on the birth and teaching of Jesus Christ. As far as I have read, Santa does not have any mention in the holy bible. Santa Claus never was associated with a religion. He was, as the old cult describes him, as “incorporating many traditions, Christian and pagan, old Catholic, Scandinavian, Dutch, German and English. Although Santa sometimes gets commercial and mixed up with religious organizations, who doesn’t love a jolly old elf? He is the idea of giving that reminds us we are all on this planet together. If we can’t agree on Santa at the holidays, we are truly a lost cause. If the woman who started all this does not want her children to participate, fine. Why should all the other children who do believe in Santa suffer? Is that the spirit of the Christmas and Hanukkah season? Superintendent Greenhall, if you think that the children won’t be disappointed with no appearance by Santa, you are kidding yourself. How many kids do you think go to sleep at night thinking of a snowman in a sleigh and coming down their chimneys? I urge the PTA to not to change the name of the event. Some traditions are worth fighting for. Joann Daly Warwick
