We know the mayor will do the right thing for Glenmere
To the editor: Regarding Mayor Pawliczek’s plan to pour Fluridone (an herbicide with a known carcinogenic breakdown) into Glenmere Reservoir, the residents of Florida and Goshen (who are consumers of the lake’s drinking water) need time to study alternative methods of controlling the weeds. There are tested and successful non-chemical ways to go about weed control. Glenmere Lake, with it’s shallow depth, is an ideal candidate for manual pulling - an approach which has produced great results in other lakes. Also, we can help Florida’s young people by creating summer jobs instead of diverting New York taxpayer money to a chemical company in New Jersey. Following the manual pulling, another proven, compatible method to keep the weeds under control is introducing native weevils into the water. They consume Eurasian Water Milfoil and are a completely safe and non-poisonous. If those who drink Glenmere Lake’s water and other concerned citizens request Mayor Pawliczek to allow time to study the alternatives, we may very well determine that the Lake can be improved without harming it, its wildlife or us. We know the mayor will do the right thing. Ruth Barone Florida
