‘Warwick can raise its voice'

Dear editor and the good people of Warwick: I’m sure you have heard of the situation in Darfur in Sudan. Genocide is occurring and many men, women and children are being killed, starved, displaced and raped. They are crying out for help and no one is doing enough. These are regular people like you and me. I think our government and other governments could do more. Elie Wiesel says: “Who is guilty? Those who commit these crimes. But to the question, ‘Who is responsible?’ we are compelled to say: ‘Aren’t we all?’” I can’t stand by and watch the world turn away from another genocide. I believe that one voice in a million can be heard. I will stand up for what I know is right, and I was wondering if you would like to help me. There is so much we can do, but it all starts with one voice. I am trying to get a relief effort started in my school, the Warwick Valley Middle School, where I am currently in the sixth grade. We could raise money as a community and donate it to the Save Darfur program. We could organize a coin drive in schools and local businesses. We could write letters to our elected officials. Warwick can raise its voice against the pain and suffering in Sudan. We can show we care. We can alert the President, the government, the rest of the country that we will not close our eyes to the horror that is occurring in Darfur. If we could raise awareness in Warwick and pull together as a community, maybe we could inspire other communities to take action as well. For more information about the genocide, go to www.savedarfur.org. Sincerely, Jessie Sander Warwick
