Understanding history

To the editor: In response to “standing for high moral ground,” Mr. Richard Bennett’s frankly simplistic view of the world and his lack of understanding history is troubling. I am sorry, but to say he has nothing but respect for the men and women in our military, then in the next breath to protest their actions is the real “doublespeak.” The time to protest is before a war takes place. That is his right. However, once we are engaged his protest does nothing more than aid and comfort the enemy. High-level communication intercepts have shown just that. It appears that our enemies remember more about Vietnam than does Mr. Bennett. Mr. Bennett mentions World War II fascism and defending our liberties. Well, if he took history 101 he would know that Germany did not attack us either. The mistake we made then was to not prepare and go after Hitler and his cohorts before their military machine got so strong. Instead, we waited, and fought a long drawn out war with millions of lives lost and billions spent. Imagine the lives that would have been saved if we took pre-emptive measures then as we did now. By defeating Iraq, we are creating a democracy that will cease to be a threat. Mr. Bennett, democracies do not fight other democracies. By showing our resolve, other countries have capitulated without firing a single shot (I.E. Libya). Your protesting does not help our troops; it only serves to demoralize them. Instead, why don’t you do something constructive to help the troops and their families that you profess so much respect for. Jerry Berman Warwick
