Transfer tax would hurt affordable housing

To the editor: Twenty-some years ago, my husband and I moved to Warwick. Yes, like so many others, we fell in love with the beautiful vistas, picturesque villages, and appealing hamlets. But what we have grown to appreciate most is the diversity of Warwick’s community. I like the fact that as I walk around town, I greet local residents who are policemen, house painters, mailmen and hairdressers as well as professors, lawyers, bankers and doctors. But more and more, ordinary working people, and the children of Warwick’s working people, are being priced out of our town. And make no mistake about it - the proposed real estate transfer tax is yet another blow to affordable housing in Warwick. I am afraid that we will be preserving nice views only for the elite few who can afford them. Keep Warwick accessible. Vote no to the real estate transfer tax on Nov. 7. Susan E. Naruk Warwick
