The intrusion of political correctness
To the editor: This is a time that is meant to celebrate peace and the joy of giving. But political correctness has decided to intrude in the lives of our children and their families. In fact, a minority seeking to impose it’s will on the majority. If the anonymous parent who was “offended” by the celebration of this “inclusive” holiday has so much time perhaps, she can go to a church and find an altar to Santa Claus or find a prayer to Santa Claus. Of course, Santa Claus is not a religious figure at all but a character that has morphed over time from St. Nicholas, Father Christmas and other cultural influences. The Founding Fathers created the First Amendment regarding freedom of speech and freedom to worship to protect the citizenry from a state-sponsored or dictated religion such as had existed in Europe prior to the creation of the Constitution. It was not meant to promote looking under every nook and cranny for any nuance of perceived First Amendment violations. The threat of litigation seems to be the weapon of choice and has been used very recently on such as the school board of Dover Pennsylvania for daring to vote out members who wished to mandate the teaching of intelligent design over evolution. The school had to pay $1 million in legal fees to protect itself from litigation. By constantly battering the First Amendment and subjecting it to these micromanaged interpretations we lose the value of it’s original and true meaning. As a result, in the future don’t be surprised if a government figure states that the teaching of evolution is outlawed based on government interpretations of the First Amendment. Let the kids enjoy Christmas as it was meant to be and keep the lawyers out of it before Peace, Joy and Goodwill become litigated out of existence. Alan S. Fernandez Florida
