The flag and the war on terrorism

To the editor: Flag Day is fast approaching on June 14. Everyone who lives in the United States of America should be proud of our flag and what it stands for. We should support the former laws that protected the symbol of our country, just as we protect the bald eagle, another symbol of the U.S.A. Why is it that the flag of our country is given to the families of fallen service people when their sons and daughters are killed in battle, to be buried with them and, on the other hand, it is not sacred enough to be protected when it is burned, defecated upon or desecrated in any other manner, but is merely shrugged off as an expression of free speech? What do these so-called lawmakers and courts think they are proving? Do they think we will sit back and do nothing forever? They are not voting on these bills in favor of their constituents’ wishes. If enough of us were to contact them with our displeasure and inform them we want them to represent us by voting in favor of the flag amendment S.J. Resolution 12 or face defeat at the polls in November, their insulting and outrageous liberal ideas would soon change. This flag amendment will be up for vote again, probably the week of June 26. Please let your conscience be your guide and contact your senators, Congress men and woman soon. To do otherwise is putting a black mark against the flag of our country and also of what our forefathers and our veterans have fought so hard to keep untarnished. If we do otherwise, we also are aiding and abetting our enemies and the terrorists. This is just another battle on the war on terrorism. Robert P. Ritzer, Commander American Legion Post #214
