The country's ‘hour of need'

To the editor: Every once in a while a letter appears in The Warwick Advertiser in which the writer says things that many of us, for one reason or another, are hesitant or unable to say. And so it was with a sense of appreciation that I read the Aug. 17 letter by Wendy Dembeck, “Action promotes peace, not “little theatricals.” I have long been an acolyte of peace and am not ashamed to confess that I was among the 80 percent of concerned Americans who in the late 1930’s vigorously opposed our entry into World War II. But serve I did after the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor for upwards of four years in the 17th and 13th Airborne divisions. And were I not too old at age 87, I would gladly serve again in our country’s hour of need. “Little theatricals” though they may be, the fact is that our country is now at war and to that extent the performances by the Women in Black encourage our enemies and demoralize our troops, they simply cannot be ignored. Sincerely, Edward P. Scharfenberger Warwick
