The $1,000 punishment

To the editor: There was no justice for Princess in Judge Coleman’s Warwick court room on Tuesday, Aug. 28. What a disgrace. Maryann Adams walked out the door without being sentenced to a single day in jail, although the District Attorney had recommended eight weekends of jail time. Apparently, there is a new “get out of jail time” card. Here’s how it works: You tell the judge that you are a single mother and sole provider. You add, with a straight face, that you have no friends or family nearby that can watch your kids if you go to jail. And, if you are really good at the game, the judge believes you and ignores the cruel and horrific nature of your crime and let’s you walk. Judge Coleman’s decision was a terrible defeat for all of us who work so hard to rescue pets from abuse and neglect and seek punishment for their tormentors. It is a tragic memorial for a gentle, sweet dog named Princess and a message that states you can beat the system and get away with causing unspeakable pain and suffering to your animal companion. In Judge Coleman’s estimation, Princess’ life was only valued at a $1,000 fine and a pathetic 100 hours of community service. We hope to God that the judge’s misguided decision is one that he will not come to regret. Lee Peterson, Warwick Lisa Notturno, Warwick
