Reply to letter on Iraq war
To the editor: In reply to Bob Fletcher and Robert Ritzer: My letter of Dec. 2 takes issue specifically with the claim that our troops are in Iraq to preserve and protect the right to critique U.S. war policy. That “America’s military has historically stepped forward and defended our nation” is not in dispute. I cited the U.S. military action in WW II as morally necessary. Soldierly courage, loyalty and dedication will not overcome the fact that we are fighting the wrong enemy in the wrong place. Saddam, for all his brutality did not perpetrate the awful events of 9/11. Saddam was never a threat to our civil liberties. NSA’s illegal spying on Americans has highlighted this administration’s brazen and criminal abuse of executive privilege and contempt for congressional oversight. I believe that the Patriot Act is a greater threat to our security than it is a useful measure against future attacks on our mainland. Sorry Bob and Rob, I appreciate your concern but you’ve misread my intent. My letter is one of loyalty and respect for 25 million vets as well as a pledge to stop further loss of life among those presently deployed. In February 2003 millions of Americans and tens of millions worldwide took to the streets to say we wanted the UN to complete its search for WMDs before embarking on war. George Bush smirked and pursued his ruinous plans. When do we get to say “I told you so”? Richard Bennett Warwick
