Putting life back in the lake

To the editor: Greenwood Lake is a vital natural resource to our community and we have an obligation to do everything possible to protect it. It is sad to think there has been no organized effort to preserve the lake’s pristine quality since it was first settled. For over 250 years, people did nothing to prevent the lake from dying. As a Greenwood Lake trustee, I was instrumental in forming an 11-member interstate lake commission to guide the rehabilitation of Greenwood Lake. Its mission is to protect and ensure the natural, scenic and recreational resources of Greenwood Lake, as well as guard the watershed from environmental threats. I developed an outstanding relationship with New Jersey officials so that, through our cooperation, we can do what is best to preserve this scenic lake. During the 2006 legislative session, I sponsored a bill in the Assembly authorizing the Greenwood Lake Commission to charge fees for boat and dock usage. This legislation passed both houses of the state Legislature and is headed to the governor for his approval. The commission previously did not have a source of revenue, so money collected under this new measure would be used by the commission to perform its duties more effectively. No one wants to have to pay to play. I want tourists and residents to continue enjoying boating, fishing and water-skiing on this magnificent lake. However, there is always a price when it comes to ensuring these natural treasures remain for future generations. For information about the Greenwood Lake Commission, contact me at 291-3631.
