Please support your humane society
To the editor: In light of the appalling theft of funds by board members of Goshen Humane Society and several leaders of organized young people’s activities, it is not surprising that the public, in their shock and outrage, is questioning the merits of donating to any charitable group. When a violation of public trust touches so close to home and we face the lack of character and integrity in someone entrusted to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable among us, sadly, every group suffers in the aftermath. The Warwick Valley Humane Society has served our community for more than 50 years. The generosity and trust of our donors, sponsors and supporters have made possible the success of our endeavors to rescue discarded, neglected and abused pets, provide them with a safe haven in which to heal in body and spirit and place them in new homes with loving families. We are well aware of the shadow cast upon all of us as a result of these betrayals. We would like to take this opportunity to assure the community that our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are honest, hard working and dedicated people for whom the welfare of the animals is paramount. Every penny from fund raisers, canisters and donations is accounted for and goes directly to the care and comfort of the homeless animals in our shelter. Our financial records are audited yearly and are always available for public scrutiny. In the face of a terrible economy and rising costs for veterinary care, food, supplies, etc., we need your confidence and support more than ever. I urge you to call or visit our shelter facility and let us address any of your concerns.
