Petition for school tax reform

| 29 Sep 2011 | 09:27

To the editor: Are you disenchanted with the unfair burden on property owners to fund our public schools? Is it not about time that you did some thing to motivate our state legislators to act on reform of public school funding? Close to 600 local voters have already signed a petition requesting just that but it would be a much more powerful message if the petition had 3,000 signatures. The petition reads: “We call upon the Governor, the New York State Legislature, and other state officials to develop a solution that will provide adequate state funding for public education, eliminate dependence on local school property taxes, and maintain funding to local governments; and We also call upon our state leaders to eliminate unfunded mandates, which increase the cost of public education and further strain the property tax base.” The petition will be presented to our legislators who will be present at a public meeting at the Warwick School District on Oct 21. You can help by adding your support in signing the petition at Town Hall, Town Senior Center, Newhard’s, Aikens Drug Store, or the Liquor Store of Warwick (36 Main St.). A petition sheet has space for 16 signatures and should anyone want to canvas their own neighborhood, just leave a message at 986-5227 and some sheets will be promptly delivered to your door and picked up when completed.
