Paying for the common good

To the editor: Ordinarily, I try to avoid letting the opinions in this space exercise me but Dennis Serpi’s letter of Dec. 16 touched me. You’re right, Dennis - but why stop there? Don’t pay for roads unless they’re the ones you actually use. Charge crime victims for the costs of police services. Maybe we can find a way to make people whose life’s possessions were just torched pay for the costs of putting out a fire in their home. Yeah, that’s the ticket ... NOT! Education is a fundamental right. We all have an obligation to provide for it - whether we have children of our own or we don’t. It’s called providing for the common good (in this case our future and posterity). I don’t know where you got your economics degree from but you should ask for a refund from that educational institution. Forrest Strauss
