Outside influences

To the editor: The residents of Warwick should know that forces far beyond our town are working insidiously to influence the outcome of our upcoming vote on the Community Preservation Fund. These groups are not necessarily local organizations, and, at least some of them, represent outsiders attempting to control what happens here in Warwick. One evening last week I received a phone call urging me to vote in favor of this referendum. I was curious as to why the proponents of this initiative would feel it is for the betterment of our community, so I asked, “Why?” And the caller quickly and “mechanically” responded that this Fund would help “... preserve the quality of life in our town....” So, I asked, “How?” At this point the caller became clearly and curiously evasive, and, finally admitted that she was calling from Iowa as a paid lobbyist and didn’t have a clue as to why this would be good (or bad) for our community. The moral of this story is that everyone should be very skeptical of anyone who’s calling and trying to influence our local vote and what we do in our own town, and always find out the rationale behind these outside efforts to impact on our lives.
