New library would give access to all
To the editor: In reading the many letters to the editor concerning the proposed new library building, one important issue has barely been mentioned: Many people with disabilities cannot navigate our current building. All of us could find ourselves in that predicament at one time or another. If you are unable to walk stairs, you will not be able to use the three floors of the library that house most of the library’s collections and services. This group includes adults and children with mobility problems, certain chronic illnesses, and the wheelchair bound. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that all new construction must provide access for the disabled. The courts recognize that physical access to public buildings is a basic right. The lack of adequate space for the 11,000-plus library members and the books and programs necessary to properly serve them is regrettable. Add to that the exclusion of many of our disabled residents and the situation becomes intolerable. We are now in a position to right this wrong. The new library will contain an elevator so that all who want to enjoy the books, educational programs and available technology will be able to utilize these wonderful resources. Then all of us can benefit from this great opportunity. Irene Schacher Warwick
