More park development would harm lake
To the editor: I found it odd that the Straus Newspapers ran a piece on Orange County’s Glenmere Lake plan without mentioning the fact that Glenmere Lake hosts one of the very last populations of New York State-listed endangered northern cricket frogs left in New York State. Any construction of pavilions, docks, etc., would destroy crucial habitat and be in violation of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regulations. The Village of Florida already has an excellent pavilion, park, and boat launch, open to all, in place within a quarter-mile of the proposed site. Why would a county reservoir, which supplies drinking water for two municipalities and hosts a population of an endangered species, need another park? There is no residency restriction on use of the Florida park. It’s free to all to use. Smells a little political to me. Jay Westerveld Sugar Loaf
