Viable businesses on Main Street

Living in Warwick I have seen many Main Street businesses come and go. As of the last few years, many have gone out of business relatively quickly after opening. In this economy it is very unfortunate, but there is a difficult lesson that can come out of this: Innovation.

There are some shops in the town that I choose to frequent more than others (Frazzleberries, Cafe a la Mode, Pennings) because the items are practical and sold at a fair price. They have learned that competitive pricing and filling the need for a certain good or service is crucial to success.

I would love to shop locally more for clothes, books and gifts, but it is very hard to sometimes when the basic items I’m looking for are not there or they are so overly priced that it makes much more fiscal sense to purchase from an online company. I would pay a few extra dollars to shop local, but often the money savings from purchasing elsewhere are substantial.

I urge new businesses to offer something that Amazon or Barnes & Noble cannot offer: A local, cost-effective, friendly environment to sell everyday goods for the common consumer. Sincerely,
