The special gift that is the sound of music

On Dec. 8, while searching for special gifts, I received a most precious gift at Pennings Farm Market Store. To my surprise, the sound of live music filled the noisy cafe.
A group of enthusiastic teenagers were happily singing an assortment of Christmas carols to a crowd of noisy families, friends and people alone.
This singing was pure, unpretentious and spontaneous. The joy was evident in the singers' voices. Not only were these kids singing without adult directing them, they were accompanying themselves with a wonderful sense of ensemble (no one voice dominated the other). They sang a cap ell a and were able to return to the tonic note with perfect pitch.
These talented and delightful musicians gave of themselves when they could have been doing other things. Giving back to the community in this manner was profound and poignantly human.
Juxtaposed against the backdrop of our society's instance messaging and acronym-filled communication, this live music was a welcome refreshment for the soul.
This musical offering was most welcome and is deeply needed in today's technology-driven world.
Thank you, Meistersingers, and Merry Christmas.
All the best for the new year.
Sincerely,
Jacquelyn Pruiksma
