Support the Warwick school budget

| 14 May 2013 | 12:46

On Tuesday, May 21, 2013, there will be a public vote on the Warwick School Budget. It is imperative that the 2013-2014 budget be approved by voters, to continue the many important programs offered by the district. If the voters do not approve the budget, the district will be forced to cut more educational, extracurricular programs and even kindergarten.

For example, school nurses might be eliminated putting children with asthma, seizures and critical allergies at risk; Elementary School media specialists might be cut and the libraries closed; and Elementary School counselors and band/strings and MS band/orchestra all cut. Further, Varsity, JV and modified sports would be considered for cuts as well. Can you imagine the impact this would have on our community?

If this budget is voted down, a contingent budget would be adopted. The district would then be forced to cut approximately 1.8 million more than it was already planning to cut. All this on top of a district that is already struggling to meet the upcoming demands of the 2.6 million cut scheduled for the same upcoming year.

Please come and support your local school district, so they can continue to offer superior programs and maintain educational excellence. These programs assist students in being prepared for their future with AP-level courses in science, math, writing, language and business. These challenging programs help to guide and lead students successfully beyond High School.

Vote “Yes” on the school budget and become involved in the decisions that directly affect your community. We also welcome your participation by joining forces with us as we advocate for change in the educational system at the state level. Voting down the budget negatively impacts our kids and is an unnecessary and drastic statement during an already constrained economic climate.
