Sue Wheeler - candidate for Florida School Board
As a life-long resident of the area and a Seward graduate, I have a long history in the Florida community.
My career as an educator, spanning 40 years, began as a teacher/education coordinator of the local Head Start pre-school program. The middle years were spent teaching at the elementary level (1st grade, 4th grade, remedial math, and instructional technology) at Minisink Valley. It was there that I began my administrative journey before joining the central office team of the Pearl River UFSD.
Over the course of the last 15 years of my career, my role as a director, assistant superintendent and lastly deputy superintendent of curriculum and instruction, afforded me the opportunity to work with teachers, administrators, parents and community members, across all grades K-12 and in all content areas, to create and support an environment for teaching and learning where each had the opportunity to thrive and grow.
For the past few years, I have been a community member of the Florida UFSD District Advisory Team.
Upon my retirement last June, I volunteered to fill a vacant position on the Board of Education and was appointed in December 2018. I am now seeking election to that seat.
My goal is to work in concert with my fellow board members to support administrators, teachers and staff in providing a strong academic and extra-curricular program where students graduate as problem solvers, critical thinkers and productive citizens in an ever-changing world.
As a school board, it is also critically important to provide oversight for compliance with NYS regulations, develop appropriate policy and maintain fiscal responsibility. Always with an eye to the future, the board of education seeks to balance academic and operational costs with the needs of the tax paying constituencies.
My experience as an educator provides the foundation for that work. The Florida Union Free School District has the potential to be a gem among small schools in New York.
My goal as a board member is to support all in that quest.
Please come out to vote on Tuesday, May 21, at the S. S. Seward Memorial Building, 51 North Main St., Florida, N.Y.
