‘Stop with the blame game’
In 1995, President Bill Clinton implemented new regulations for the CRA (Community Reinvestment Act) requiring banks to use “innovative or flexible” lending practices to address credit needs of low- and moderate-income borrowers and neighborhoods.
Translation: Relax lending standards and bank regulators were expected to enforce these relaxed standards. The revision of CRA called for “financial strategies” that would help homeowners that lack cash to buy a home or to make the payments.
Once the standards were relaxed for low-income borrowers these relaxed standards could not be denied to all borrowers.
Fannie and Freddie also revised their underwriting systems to accept these new loans which previously they would have rejected.
Also, in 1999, Bill Clinton repealed the Glass-Steagall Act which was enacted in 1933 to prevent banks from uncontrollable speculation (gambling).
Bush was president for eight months when the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks occurred.
The first World Trade Center bombing occurred on Feb. 26, 1993.
What government actions were taken between 1993 and September 2001?
Note: I am not defending Republicans and blaming Democrats. Both sides made serious mistakes. Stop with the blame game.
