U.S. Sen. John McCain died Saturday, Aug. 25, at age 81 his ranch in Arizona after a yearlong battle with brain cancer. Here’s a sampling of local reaction:
Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus
“I was saddened to hear that Senator John McCain has lost his courageous battle with brain cancer. Senator McCain lived his life with bravery and integrity and certainly was a role-model to me. He will always be remembered for his decorated career in the U.S. Navy and for being a true American Patriot.”
Assemblyman James Skoufis
“The enormous outpouring in the minutes following John McCain’s passing becoming news is a reflection of how deeply he loved our country and how clearly Americans recognized that love. He leaves a legacy of loyal and unwavering service to the United States. This Democrat will miss him.”
New York State Republican Chair Ed Cox
“As the son and grandson of formidable four-star admirals, John McCain was deeply devoted to America and her ideals. He served both with honor and courage as he ambly demonstrated in war as a POW and in peace as a Senator and presidential candidate.
“While I knew him first as a member of the family of a President who had a close bond with Vietnam POW’s, as chairman of his New York presidential campaign I saw up close his fighting spirit and courage single-handedly revive a flat broke campaign to a New Hampshire victory and his party’s nomination followed by a tough but always honorable campaign and a special graciousness in defeat.
“Whether at war, or in politics, or representing America abroad, no one fought harder with more courage and honor for his country and its ideals than John McCain. On behalf of Tricia and I and the entire NYGOP, we offer our deepest condolences to Cindy and the McCain family.”
