‘Our doors remain open’

I am disappointed in the Greenwood Lake Union Free School District Board of Education’s 4-3 approval of a referendum requiring voters to decide on sending high school students to Tuxedo for five more years.

I respect the right of voters to decide this issue but think the board missed out on an opportunity to do what it was elected to do – make the best academic and fiscally responsible decisions for students and taxpayers.

If you look at the comparables – tuition, academic program, specialized courses, extracurricular activities, graduation rates and percentage of students with post-secondary plans – Warwick would have been a superior choice.

Change is hard. While it is understandable to resist changing what has been the norm for 30 years, tough economic times demand that fiscal responsibility not be overrun by emotional considerations.

Ultimately, it is up to the voters to decide on June 19 if they want to pay the price for sending students to Tuxedo rather than Warwick – approximately $7 million more in tuition costs for the existing number of students over five years.

In the meantime, our doors will remain open to Greenwood Lake students in the event taxpayers decide that price is too high.
