Opting out

| 12 Jul 2018 | 05:16

In today's Times Herald-Record it was printed an alarming statistics about Warwick School district students who refused to participate in
2017 NY State standardized test. This "opt-out" of students has reached
40 percent and higher in mid-Hudson region. Those tests are turning our kids into "Zeros."
In Warwick the opt-out refusal for the English Language Art test was 35.9 percent and for the Math test it was 29.7 percent. This is unbelievable percentage. Why are we paying such a high school taxes and producing students that are unemployable in real life and/or unsuitable for higher education.
The only benefactor of our already high school taxes are the teachers and the school administrators. I would like to know what is the response to those statistics from our School Superintendent and the Warwick School Board president. I cannot imagine to go to my parents and tell them that "I refuse to participate in school testing," simply impossible, yet here and now, students are doing it with their parents consent.
This has to change and/or NY state Education department has to take drastic action for the school districts that allow their students to opt-out. Warwick School district will now import students from Greenwood Lake School district for a tuition fee of $ 11,0000 per student/year. How is this possible, when the cost for Warwick student is $23,000 per student/year.
I would like to know the reasoning from our School superintendent and the School board president, how was this approved. The Warwick school taxes are amongst the highest in the region as is. The people from Warwick are moving out, precisely for this reason. Citizens of Warwick has to show their feelings at the voting booth, next time around.
    Sincerely,
    John Ihnachak
