Free speech yes, hate speech no

I am disturbed by your decision to publish the letter by Mr. Tyrell of Venice Florida in the March 8-14 issue. Saying “the Democrats are the party of Satan,” saying “you and the pile of garbage you have for governor" and other nasty remarks does not qualify as “free speech” – it is “hate speech.”
I am sorry that our dialogue has become so ugly in recent years, and attribute much of it to Donald Trump, who repeatedly uses false and polarizing language, such as “the Democrats hate America” and “climate change is a Chinese hoax."
Hate speech does not make for a better society. Your own guidelines for letters reserves the right to edit “for libel, good taste, grammar and punctuation.”
The Warwick Advertiser should and does welcome free speech, including controversial ideas, but you should draw the line and say no to hate speech.
    Sincerely,
    Howard Horowitz
