'Can teacher reductions actually be considered a deficit-reduction tool at WVCSD?'
When I read the headline "WVSD board warns of projected $870,000 shortfall" in last week's Warwick Advertiser, I began to question if this is the same WVCSD to which I go to school every day and pay taxes to every year.
What made me question myself even further was the threat of reducing teachers in order to become budget neutral, something I know our school district is dedicated to providing quality education to all students, of course, would never do. Or even worse, the possibility of yet another tax levy on the Warwick community as a result from this shortfall.
It almost makes me wonder if this supposedly "budget neutral" $10 million capital improvement expenditure had anything to do with this.
In a time when even our own federal government can't operate with any sense of fiscal responsibility, it shouldn't surprise me how the Warwick Valley Central School District is in this position. That being said, it is still very concerning that the quality of education is actually being discussed as a tool to balance the books.
Moreover, this threat of teacher reductions is especially alarming since our schools are supposed to be exemplary learning and growing environments for our future leaders.
In the spirit of not trying to sound like a complainer; all I ask is that as our school district is improving, the values held by the Warwick taxpayers as well as the parents and students that rely on teachers daily are upheld and kept in mind when the school board makes these very important budget decisions.
