BYOBag Warwick Committee: Time to get involve

| 21 Mar 2019 | 05:20

We recently got the news from Albany that the state senate has included in their budget an allotment for what is called a "gold standard" BYOBag Act.
Such a law bans thin plastic carry-out bags and includes a fee for paper and all other bags at checkout. Case studies have shown that this kind of legislation is the most successful. So this is good news.
Unfortunately, the assembly has yet to allocate any funds to the plastic bag issue. Constituents have until April 1st to convince the assembly to put this initiative in their budget.
Riverkeeper has launched a campaign to urge our representatives to allocate the funds needed to support the NYS BYOBag Act. Help us end plastic bag pollution in New York State. Visit https://www.riverkeeper.org/get-involved/take-action/ to contact your representatives to support the NYS BYOBag Act today.
You may have heard that Governor Cuomo has a plastic bag ban on his agenda, but it merely calls for banning thin plastic carry-out bags.
When Chicago and Honolulu tried Governor Cuomo’s approach — just a ban on plastic bags — retailers responded by switching to heavier single-use plastic bags, and paper bag use skyrocketed. They repealed their laws within months.
Would you consider calling the governor's office and offer a comment about this? 518-474-8390 It might be helpful in swaying his opinion.
Thank you all for your efforts.
