‘Here we go again'

To the editor: Every time something is voted down in this community, it never seems to go away. It comes back over and over until the weary voter is just worn down. I am afraid that even if the new library proposal is defeated that this matter will revisit us. We could just give into it now, or stay the course. What we need is a viable alternative. We need to think outside of the box. A few years ago the Warwick citizenry was asked to vote for a major high school expansion and due to a projected huge increase in student populace, it was approved. Now, just the opposite is being suggested, that the future student enrollment will decrease. This is highlighted by the consideration of adding Greenwood Lake students to our district. It is clear that we have excess capacity in these schools. It is also clear that each school has a library, sufficient meeting rooms and auditoriums that are as of now underutilized. Why not take advantage of the buildings and facilities that we already have? This can be done at a far less cost than $8.5 million, plus the added operating costs. Some could also argue that given the fact that our schools are dispersed throughout our community that access would be easier. And certainly, parking would not be a problem. No matter what some vested interests may say, the Internet has lessened the load on the public library. And if I hear one more time that this project is only going to cost a cup or two of coffee a day, I may just scream. These so-called nickels and dimes add up to hundreds of dollars to an already overtaxed public. I personally know people who have had to leave Warwick due to the high taxes, especially those on fixed incomes. We can still have adequate facilities if we just get creative. Warwick, just like it’s inhabitants, must live within its means. Jerald Berman Warwick
