Golden Hill PTA creates Diane Leo scholarship
To the editor: The Golden Hill Parent Teacher Association is pleased to announce the formation of “The Diane Leo Honorary Scholarship for Teaching.” This scholarship will be presented annually beginning this June to a graduating senior at S. S. Seward Institute interested in pursuing a degree in teaching. This scholarship has been created to honor local legacy Mrs. Diane Leo, who retired in 2006 after teaching in the district for 30 years. Diane, an exemplary teacher who continues to live in the community, has had a far reaching influence on the hundreds of students she taught and the Golden Hill community. She was the driving force behind so many initiatives at the school and beyond. The annual original historical skit on Seward Day is her creation. This year she came out of retirement to write and direct the production. She also is the creator of Golden Hill’s “Golden Express” Post Office, an initiative began in her classroom became a school-wide project in 1997. Diane’s commitment to her students and ability to motivate them are, by far, her greatest contributions. She faced each day with optimism and managed to bring an enthusiasm into the classroom that was new and contagious, even after years of dedication and hard work. She gave each and every one of her students the support and encouragement they needed to succeed and develop a love for learning. If you want to join us in recognizing Diane’s remarkable career and help inspire a student to follow the same path we ask you to make a donation in her honor. You may mail a check made payable to “The Diane Leo Honorary Scholarship for Teaching” to Mrs. Diane Shuback, District Treasurer, Florida UFSD, 51 North Main St. - PO Drawer 757, Florida, NY 10921-0757. Thank you for helping us to celebrate Diane’s teaching career and helping to create new legacies. We sincerely appreciate your support even if you are unable to make a contribution at this time. Sincerely, Meg Sgombick, PTA president and Ronald De Pace, principal Golden Hill Elementary School
