Global warming?
To the editor: First, let me emphasize that being an outdoorsman, I, too, do not want our waters polluted or our air quality to suffer. However, this big “the sky is falling” mentality about greenhouse gases and humans causing global warming is frankly nonsense. Every so many years, another prediction of a major catastrophy makes its way into our headlines (30 years ago it was global cooling, the coming of another ice age). This mass hysteria is fueled by reports of ice caps melting, threats of oceans rising, tipping points being reached, leading to our doom, and on and on it goes. Yet, some obvious facts are mysteriously left out of the main stream media. For instance: 1) The media talks about 38 cubic miles of ice cap being lost in a three-year period in Greenland. Yikes, get out your rowboats. What they fail to report is, at that rate , it would take 2,000 years for the oceans to raise one foot. 2) Coincidently, it appears that the polar ice cap on Mars has been shrinking as well. Must be all those martians driving SUVs. 3) Total carbon dioxide represents only 4 percent of the total greenhouse gases. The biggest culprit? Water vapor (I guess we need to blanket all the oceans to stop this). 4) The so-called Kyoto Treaty puts heavy restrictions on the U.S., but conveniently exempts China, arguably the biggest culprit in this CO2 thing. Interesting. 5) The mainstream media refuses to report on the many prominent scientists who disagree with the human-global warming connection. You see, this whole issue has much more to do with politics then any threat to humanity. It is another topic grabbed by the left to promote an agenda, one of more government control, one that is anti-west. We have had numerous historical fluctuations in global temperature. This is nothing new. This is politics pure and simple. It is promoted by people whose jobs depend on a crisis, whether imaginary or not. It is embraced by leftist for political power. And frankly, it is much ado about nothing. Jerald Berman Warwick
