Frosty the Snowman is a trouble maker'
To the editor: At the risk of being labeled anti-Semitic or anti-Christmas, I’d like to add to the “controversy” of Sanfordville Elementary School’s upcoming Santa Breakfast: Frosty the Snowman is a trouble maker, running around town wreaking havoc! How dare he be chosen to represent a holiday event! In reality, he was created in 1950 by a songwriter intent on making a buck, following up on his more successful “Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer.” Seriously, isn’t this a brouhaha that could have been avoided? Santa Claus is representative of a consumerist culture. We are not buying presents to honor Christ, but to honor each other and how much money we can spend. I’m completely guilty of it, and I love it. I get the week off from my job to spend with my kids and watch them break everything they’ve just been given. Rarely does religion fall into it. Let’s be kind to one another. And kindness includes not stomping on the traditions that a season brings. Many cultures have blended together to get us where we are today. Can’t we do the same and blend our more common cultures together? After all, we all get to enjoy the days off and do with them what we will, whether that’s religious ceremony, pagan, or athletic (skiing anyone?). It’s the idea of giving that reminds us we are all on this planet together, for the long run. Happy Holidays: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas and all that jazz! Pam Walker Warwick
