Facts, not projections
To the editor: Maureen Giuliani’s recent My Turn piece left a lot to be desired in the fairness category, surprising for someone representing “Warwick Residents for a Fair Education.” Here are some facts to consider: The Warwick school district’s own demographic study shows that high school enrollment will drop substantially within the next few years. The study, according to the school administration, has been reliable. The high school currently has 200 empty lockers. Greenwood Lake does not have permission to establish its own high school. That is misinformation perhaps perpetrated by those who want to sabotage any Warwick-Greenwood Lake deal. The current Tuxedo-Greenwood Lake dispute has nothing to do with “towns.” Greenwood Lake, under the law, has the right to tuition its high school students to any district willing to accept them. The current contract with Tuxedo is over at the end of the year. Greenwood Lake is doing what any district in its situation is doing - looking to buy more program at less cost for its students. Greenwood Lake’s high school enrollment is slated to drop from around 300 next year to approximately 250 in a few years. That coupled with Warwick’s enrollment drop would probably leave Warwick High with less students than are currently attending classes. In terms of the financial picture, you are forgetting the aid generated by Greenwood Lake high school students. That could sweeten the financial picture considerably and give Warwick the opportunity to add staff and program if that is what’s wanted. To sum up, the two districts are still gathering facts. That should be the key word - facts, not unfounded projections. R. Nowak Greenwood Lake
