Energy saving tips
To the editor: This week’s oppressive heat wave reminds us that hot weather always results in extraordinarily high electricity usage. Demand for electricity in New York continues growing each year and affects the cost of other necessary commodities. Individuals and families who reduce their electricity usage can make huge differences in energy conservation and lower costs. Heating and air conditioning a home during the year make up 42 percent of the average household energy cost in New York, while a water heater takes up another 14 percent. The refrigerator and lights make up eight percent each and all other appliances expend the remaining 28 percent. Here are a few helpful tips to better manage the cost of energy and to reduce energy usage: Use electric fans to stay cool since they use much less energy than air conditioners. Turn off air conditioners or set their thermostats at 78 degrees or higher when leaving home. Use washer, dryer and dishwasher during off peak hours, such as morning or late in the day. Give air conditioners a break by using programmable thermostats. Close blinds and curtains during the day to block out heat from the sunlight. Shop for an alternative energy supplier offering a better rate. Look for the ENERGY STAR symbol when purchasing new air conditioners or major appliances. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms and change most frequently used lighting sources to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Replacing a regular 100 watt light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb can save roughly $16 per bulb each year.
