County should buy Camp LaGuardia
To the editor: Residents, businesses and visitors have had to suffer for decades from the negative effects that the New York City Homeless Shelter has had on Chester, Blooming Grove and the surrounding area. The imposition of its residents causes a constant strain on our towns’ law enforcement resources, has tied up our courts and continues waste our tax dollars. Local representatives, citizen groups and concerned residents have worked tirelessly for an end to this nightmare with little results. Meanwhile, the quality of life continues to suffer. On Feb. 1, the Orange County Legislature has a chance to purchase the Camp LaGuardia site from New York City. This purchase will ensure that the property will no longer continue to operate as a homeless shelter. There are many proposed uses for this site, but the most important thing is that this property be kept on the tax rolls. This may be the only chance we get at this. I urge residents to call or write their county legislators and ask them to support this important vote. Thank you. Steve Neuhaus Chester Councilman
