One morning in a discussion over coffee, somebody asked whether or not Hearthstone Apartments paid taxes. As a fireman for over 55 years and a Florida Fire Commissioner, I was concerned. So I went to Goshen to check it out. This is the end result: Hearthstone Apartments was paying taxes to the Goshen Fire District. However, it is actually in the Florida Fire District. We also found eleven properties in the Town of Goshen that were paying taxes to the Goshen Fire District but should have been paying to the Florida Fire District. Two properties were paying to the Chester Fire District but should have been paying to the Florida Fire District. Three properties were paying no fire district taxes, but should have been paying to the Florida Fire District. I am happy to say this has been corrected, and as a result the Florida Fire District picked up approximately $6,000,000 in assessed valuation for the year 2012. I want to thank the Town of Goshen Assessor’s Office and County of Orange Real Property Tax Service Director John McCarey for their cooperation in getting this resolved. I will be contacting Mr. McCarey in the near future with a plan so this doesn’t happen with any taxing district in Orange County. William “JR” Pillmeier Florida Fire Commissioner
