Autism: A challenge for the whole community

To the editor: Recently, I met with administrators at the Orange-Ulster Board of Cooperative Educational Services and toured their facility. This is part of my ongoing study into the services available to our autistic population. Autism is an extensive developmental disorder that limits learning and slows intellectual development. People with autism have great difficulty relating and responding to other people, events or even objects. More than 7,000 people in New York are diagnosed with this disability. The cause of autism is still unknown; however, some researchers believe it has a biological basis, which is probably genetic. It often is possible to diagnose autism before someone is two years old. Care and treatment for autism include diagnosis, parent training, highly structured recreational programs, specialized education, day treatment, in-home and out-of-home residential services, and programs to develop daily living and social skills. I also met recently with members of Project Believe who, like several other groups in this region, are advocating for increased classroom space for students with autism. Proper placement of these individuals is crucial. This is why I will continue to work as a liaison between these groups and the New York State Department of Education, to make sure the needs of families tackling the challenges of autism are met. Education and awareness are two of the most important tools we have in combating the misconceptions and indifferences facing those living with disabilities such as autism. As family members, friends and neighbors we need to reach out and ensure our communities provide the same quality of life and opportunities to all of our residents. This is why I am forming a local advisory group on autism to help me draft appropriate legislation, educate the community about this disorder, and keep me informed on the tribulations facing the autistic community.
