Action promotes peace, not ‘little theatricals'

To the editor: Women in Black act as if they have a lock on the desire for peace. Everyone desires peace. After the 1993 World Trade Center bombing we were too naive to recognize the salvo against us. Years of unanswered attacks followed, but peace was never the result. Turning the other cheek did not bring peace. Inaction instigated more brazen attacks. Being an ostrich with its head in the sand does not promote peace. Action does. Besides performing little theatricals, what to the Women in Black do? Do they send packages through organizations helping our young people far from home? Have they donated old cell phones for soldiers? Do they support the USO or volunteer at VA hospitals? Has anyone fundraised to send school supplies, clothing, or sports equipment to children in war torn countries? Do they aid women in areas impacted by war? Do the Women in Black do anything in more than a theoretical way to show they care? I didn’t see Women and Black respecting fallen heroes on Memorial Day. Were they celebrating the freedom to say what they do on July 4th? Do they do anything other than take an occasional walk or write an occasional letter? Would that the world were more humane. Recognize that it is not. Read history. As far as those who pray for peace, remember what McArthur said: “A soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must bear and suffer the deepest wounds and scars of war.” Wendy Dembeck Warwick
