A place to buy socks and underwear
To the editor: As I grew up in Queens. New York, many times it crossed my mind that if an out-of-towner watched the evening news regularly, they would think the city of New York began and ended with Manhattan island. It didn’t take that long to feel the same way about our Village’s Main Street. If you kept up with local news and events, one might think the village started at West Street and ended at St. Anthony’s. Just remember all the money wasted fighting CVS. More money is spent on plants, pots and replacing pots and plants during the warmer months. The street sweeper has been on my block maybe twice this summer. Backhoes and dump trucks remove snow from main street, while my driveway gets plowed in every time one passes. West Street gets colorful crosswalks, I’m getting a pothole in front of my driveway. Now there isn’t money to replace full leaf bags with new empty ones. For all the money wasted on CVS we could have bought a leaf vacuum truck by now. As a full-time resident, many shops on Main Street are of no use to me. You can’t eat a Louis XIV chair. If for some reason I had only Main Street to support my family for one month, it couldn’t be done. I couldn’t agree more with Miss Heather Guidone’s letter of last week. Like her I’m sorry The Bookstore is gone but my scarce business was not going to save him. Heck, I have barely enough time to skim through a newspaper. Why can’t we just admit that 9 out of 10 stores are for the out-of-town buyers and the local customer should fend for themselves via internet or half hour drive to the mall. Give me a local place to buy socks and underwear and I’ll be there. Kevin Murphy Warwick
