A library defines a society'
To the editor: An experience I had at the Albert Wisner Public Library demonstrates both its value to our community and the need for an expanded facility. I attended a meeting of The Friends of the Library, which usually squeezes around a table on the third level. On that evening, gentlemen were playing chess upstairs, the tables and floor on the second level were filled with students, while others worked at computers, and a book club met in the children’s room. The Friends had to crowd into a small space near the front desk. In addition to offering books from its own shelves and the collections of 50 libraries within the Ramapo Catskill System, our library offers a variety of programs for the entire community free of charge. However, both the collection and programs are limited due to lack of space, handicap accessibility, and parking. Our library holds within its walls our history and our future. It brings us together and fosters a cultural and creative dialogue. It is democratic, equally serving the entire community. Dedication to its public institutions defines a society. A new library will serve and enrich our diverse and growing community. Warwick should have a public library that reflects its population, pride and values.
