New Windsor — The Union Ave. YMCA announced it is running a family healthy lifestyle workshop in order to support families of elementary school children to make healthier lifestyle choices. The one-hour workshop--which was also offered on Nov. 11--will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 18. The obesity rates among today’s youth are so alarming that families are looking to make changes early. In response, the Union Ave. YMCA is offering a workshop on helping families make healthier lifestyles. The workshop will focus on how much and what types of food our families should be eating. Participants will learn how to get a personalized food pyramid based on age, gender and activity level. In this way, each family member will know how much to each and what types of food. Families will learn how to balance their diet among the different food groups and how much is in a serving size. The fee for the workshops is $10 per family, although the fee is waived for all families in the YMCA’s Swim Academy program or Healthy Kids after-school program. Free babysitting is provided. The workshops take place in the Union Ave. YMCA’s main building at 565 Union Ave. in New Windsor. For directions, check the YMCA Web site at www.unionavey.com. For more information or to register for the family healthy lifestyle workshop, call the Union Ave. YMCA at 845-561-4700, e-mail unionavenuey@aol.com or visit the main building.
