Warwick Valley teen named 2006 Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Hero'

WARWICK Matthew Krauze, 18, of Warwick has been named a 2006 Huggable Hero by Build-A-Bear Workshop. Huggable Heroes® is an annual program recognizing kids in communities across North America for their outstanding acts of kindness and volunteerism. Krauze volunteers for Puppies Behind Bars, an organization that trains inmates to raise guide dogs for the blind and explosive detection canines for law enforcement. He takes their pups into his home and exposes them to situations they cannot encounter in prison. Through a youth service-based organization, Krauze also spearheaded a fundraising raffle for the benefit of Puppies Behind Bars. It raised over $1,000 for the cause. Krauze was joined by the other 2006 Huggable Heroes when they were honored at the First Star Charity Gala in Los Angeles, Calif. on June 3. The Huggable Heroes will be featured in the upcoming 2007 Huggable Heroes calendar, available at Build-A-Bear Workshop stores this winter. In addition to their five-day trip to Los Angeles, the Huggable Heroes will each receive a $2,500 donation from Build-A-Bear Workshop to the charity of their choice. “We are so proud and impressed by everything our Huggable Heroes have accomplished,” said Maxine Clark, Founder and Chief Executive Bear of Build-A-Bear Workshop. “These young people are great examples of success, proving that no matter how old you are, or where you live, you can make a difference. We encourage our Huggable Heroes to continue their great work, knowing that they will touch many people’s lives and become even greater future leaders for our country.” Build-A-Bear Workshop received nearly 1,500 nominations for the Third Annual Search for Huggable Heroes. There were stories of kids helping other kids, kids raising money for the less fortunate and giving their time and energy to those in all parts of the world. Krauze was among 12 winners selected from all over North America.
