Warwick Valley School news for the coming marking period
Warwick - The weather has finally caught up with the calendar. Please note your February calendar with these upcoming school events that promise to keep things heated up within the schools. Warwick Valley School District Schools are closed Friday, Feb. 16, and Monday, Feb. 19, for President’s Weekend. The next Board of Education meeting is Monday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Kings Elementary School. Eighth Grade Parents Night to prepare parents for their child’s move to high school will be held Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in the High School auditorium (snow date is Feb. 7). Second marking period ends Jan. 26. Warwick Valley High School College financial aid planning night was cancelled and is expected to be rescheduled. Nominations for incoming National Honor Society candidates with superior academics and community service will be finalized during the month of January, with letters to prospective candidates being sent out early February. Coming off a successful run of its presentation of “Aladdin,” the Warwick Valley High School Drama Club will begin preparations for its spring presentation of the musical, “Annie Get Your Gun.” High School Pops Concert will be held on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. High school daily announcements can be reviewed on the district Web site by clicking onto “our schools” and scrolling to the high school and then “Announcements”. The next PTSA meeting is scheduled for Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Warwick Valley Middle School There will be a student senate dance for all grades, Friday, Feb. 23, 7-9 p.m.. Family Ski Night at Hidden Valley Resort will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24. Look for information about Ski Night which will be given to students shortly to bring home. Do not forget to check out the PTA’s updated Web site at www.wvmspta.com The next “Coffee Chat with Mr. Kolesar” will be held Wed., Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. Many sixth graders have fond memories of The Ashokan Field Campus trip. Now families can see what the fun is all about. The Ashokan Camp is hosting a “Family Fun Day” with maple sugaring, snow tubing, ice skating, colonial crafts and more on Saturday, Feb. 11. Students were informed and entertained by a recent assembly put on by the high school students in coordination with Red Ribbon Week to persuade students to stay away from drugs. Park Avenue Elementary School Future scientists share their discoveries at the annual science fair to be held on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.. Park Avenue student showed their generosity providing donations to the Warwick Food Pantry and making the holidays special for many families in need. Monthly donations are continued throughout the year and collected the last Friday of every month, including Feb. 23. There is no Park Ave PTA meeting during February. Pine Island Elementary School “Parents as Reading Partners” which encourages shared reading at home, is in the planning process and still in need of volunteers Family Fun Game night with Bingo and other games and refreshments is this Friday, Jan. 26, from 7-9 p.m. The Odyssey of the Mind teams will be going to BOCES in Goshen on Feb. 24. Valentine’s Day Dance is cancelled for this year. Founders Day celebration will be after the next PTA meeting to be held on Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. In March the PTA is planning to hold the PTA meeting at 4:30 p.m. in the hopes of encouraging more people to attend. Third and fourth grade Music Festival will be held at the high school on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.; the fifth grade also will perform at the high school but on Feb. 14th at 7 p.m. School pictures will be taken Feb. 27. Don’t forget to bring your smiles to school! In preparation of spring PTA elections, the board is taking nominations for upcoming vacancies in the PTA board. Kings Elementary School On Jan. 5 and 12, Kings families enjoyed Bingo sponsored by the Kings PTA. The Kings Drama club has begun practicing for 100 Years of Broadway to be presented on May 31 for senior citizens and community groups and on June 1 at the Lycian Centre. On Feb. 1, Kings students will attend a Mad Science assembly. On Feb. 2, the Kings PTA will hold its annual family dance night. All Kings families are invited. On Feb. 12, the fifth graders from Kings will be singing pioneer songs for the Board of Education meeting. The fifth graders have been studying the U.S. Western Expansion for social studies. They have learned about Lewis & Clark, the Oregon Trail, Indian Tribes of the West, pioneer life, frontier towns and the Gold Rush. Also during the month, the fifth graders will participate in a day devoted to experiencing the pioneer life with singing, dancing, mining, games and food. The Kings PTA is collecting recipes for its Kings PTA Cookbook, to share the family “secret recipes.” The Science Fair will be held Feb. 22, 6:30-8:30 p.m. The PTA will hold their regular meeting on Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Sanfordville Elementary School The annual “Parents as Reading Partners” month-long event will run from Feb. 5 to 23.
