Warwick — The town is cracking down. After much vandalism at the Town Park sports facility out on Union Corners Road, the town has installed cameras to help catch those who continue to do it. Additional lighting is also planned. For many years, vandals have broken into the snack bar area and bathrooms, stealing food and destroying the facility. The skylights in the building have been broken in order for the vandals to gain access and graffiti has become a problem. “It is a very isolated area,” said town Supervisor Michael Sweeton. “We patrol it, but the travel time to get back there gives them plenty of time to run off.” Sweeton said many times those doing damage come to the facility on ATVs. The town recently finished building additional fields and parking at the facility, which is used by thousands every season for soccer, baseball, lacrosse, and football. Two new all-purpose fields were created behind the snack bar and bathrooms. An all weather grassy parking area was also built and the road that comes into the complex was extended back past the snack area. Now the complex has three large and two smaller fields, Sweeton said, allowing the town to take one out of use each year to reseed and improve.
