Warwick — Mayor Michael Newhard and Trustee Roger Metzger went to Albany recently to accept the village’s 23rd Tree City USA award, making the Village of Warwick one of the most honored Tree Cities in the Hudson Valley. The Tree City USA® program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. It provides direction, technical assistance, public attention and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities throughout the country. Speaking of trees, notice anything new lately in the Village of Warwick? The State Department of Transportation recently planted 36 trees along Oakland Avenue and Main Street in just two days. Soon the DOT will be back to install decorative grates over the holes. The village selected the trees and the sites. According to Newhard, different varieties of trees and sizes were selected for specific sites. Many of them are flowering trees. “These trees were specially selected for their size,” said Metzger, who is also the liaison to the Shade Tree Commission. “The limbs are high enough to walk and park under but won’t reach the electrical wires.”
