Warwick - The heavy rain stopped just in time for the Warwick Valley Farmers’ Market to officially open on Sunday, May 20. “After the early rain,” said Market Manager Jo Hull, “the sun broke through and we were thrilled that so many people came to welcome us back for the season.” Hull explained, however, that not all the vendors were there. “You know,” she said, “we’re not ready at this time of year for corn or berries and certainly not apples.” Founder and Co-chair Cheryl Rogowski, however, has a connection with a hydroponic grower in Highland N.Y. who has tomatoes and cucumbers as well as red and yellow peppers. “We also have a new Goat Cheese vendor,” said Hull. “It’s Lynnhaven out of Pine Bush. Everyone who had a taste raved.” Every Sunday, from May through October 2007, area farmers, bakers, nursery owners, wine producers, fruit growers, bee-keepers, cheese-makers, restaurateurs, specialty purveyors and musicians will gather at the South Street parking to offer visitors and residents fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits. The Warwick Farmers’ Market combines art, education, and entertainment and is one of the few places where you can speak directly to the professionals responsible for producing and growing heirloom tomatoes or learn about what gets labeled “organic.” On Sundays the Market also features a “Chef of the Day” offering culinary tips and samples. The Warwick Valley Farmers’ Market, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, is open from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the South Street parking lot. For information, call 987-9990.
