Warwick — The Warwick Town Democratic Committee is endorsing Judge Elaine Slobod for Supreme Court Justice of the Ninth Judicial District. Slobod met with the committee at its March meeting. A resident of Tuxedo, Slobod is currently judge of the Surrogate’s Court of Orange County, and Acting Supreme Court Justice for the Ninth Judicial District. She has held her position on the Surrogate’s Court since 1987, where she has worked to substantially increase staffing. In her previous position as judge of Orange County Family Court, she worked to acquire a mental health assessment team, and helped to start a CASA program, in which volunteers act as advocates for foster children. She was also instrumental in starting the PEACE Program in Orange County. This program educates parents on how custody litigation can affect their children. She opened the court to the press so that deliberations could be held up to public scrutiny. Slobod received the Liberty Bell Award for dedication and long standing service to the people of Orange County in 2001, from the Orange County Bar Association and the Women’s Bar Association of Orange and Sullivan Counties. In 1991, and again in 1995, she received the Ruth Rosen Award for outstanding service and dedication to the legal profession from the Women’s Bar Association of Orange and Sullivan Counties. The members of the committee concluded that the district would greatly benefit from her continued service, and by this endorsement, are committed to helping her achieve victory in the November election.
