Warwick - Jim Martorano, one of six Democrats vying for New York’s 19th Congressional District seat now held by Republican Sue Kelly, met earlier this month with the Warwick Democratic Committee at the Tuscan Café. “This isn’t just about my goals or my candidacy,” Martorano said. “It’s about resetting the priorities of our district and our nation. Democrats must unite long before the fall campaign season heats up and work together to ensure we are represented by someone who shares our priorities.” Emphasizing his intention to put progressive policies above partisanship, he ticked off several issues he intends to stress. Among them: • More than 45 million Americans have no health insurance at all, and more than three million of these are New Yorkers. “We must work toward assuring that everyone - most especially children - has access to quality health care,” he said. • A $5 trillion surplus at the end of the Clinton administration has turned into a debt that now approaches $8 trillion. “We must restore fiscal responsibility and a balanced budget,” the candidate said. • “More than 2,300 service men and women have died in Iraq while nearly $300 billion has been spent on a war for which the justification remains in question. The current administration has not offered a plan for peace. We must bring home our troops while securing a democratic Iraq.” Martorano has served for 15 years on the Yorktown Town Board and is deputy town supervisor. He has been an attorney with the Bronx Legal Aid Society since 1977. He attended Fordham College and Law School. His community efforts have emphasized encouraging environmental protection, preserving open space and supporting sustainable growth. More about his policy platform is available at www.Jim2006.com. Warwick Democrats will hosting Ben Shuldiner, another of the congressional candidates, at their meeting in May. Candidates John Hall and Judy Aydelott have previously made presentations.
