Walking path opens

Warwick — The Town of Warwick just completed an eye-catching walking and cycling path along West Street Extension, from the village line out to County Route 1, toward the Warwick Valley Middle and High Schools. The walkway, which cost about $90,000 and was paid for by the developers of Pelton Crossing, was made with a special imprinting to look like bricks, just like the crosswalks in many areas throughout the village, and painted to stand out from the road. The path will give walkers and bike riders a safer path getting to and from their destinations, especially school, according to Village of Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard and Town of Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton. Newhard said the village is looking into grants, specifically a Safe Ways to School grant, to connect the new walkway with the existing sidewalks further down on West Street. This task may be a bit more challenging than the one just completed since there are about 15 homeowners involved and the roadway is narrower. For now, though, the walk to school beginning next week will be a bit safer.
